Topeka came into Biloxi trying to snap a 5 game losing streak. In a barn where they have found a number of successes this is a weekend series that plays big into the Scarecrows playoff hopes. Entering tonight Topeka sits just one point out of third in the Empire division while trying to build upon the lead over Indiana, Watertown and Danbury who sit outside the playoffs at the moment. Though Biloxi has been officially eliminated the team is looking for wins and to show what they can do ahead of next week's trade deadline and next season.
The Scarecrows came out flying peppering Anton Borodkin with 10 shots in the first 3 minutes of the game, but it was 13th shot of the game as Scott Coash fed TJ Sneath who blind passed to Cameron Clark at 7:02 of the first period and Clark fired it into the awning as Borodkin was sprawled out for the 1-0 lead. Biloxi didn't give up and after a long delay for a piece of glass that fell out the Breakers found ways to attack and newcomer Chiwetin Blacksmith forced his way into the slot beating Bryn Sommerfeldt to tie the game up at 1-1.
Biloxi was the recipient of some puck luck as Topeka threw a pass into the slot and banked it off Gordon Whalen's foot into the back of the net with Matthew Gellerman getting credit as the last man to touch the puck to put the Breakers up 2-1 5:13 into the second period. Matt Stoia added to the lead as he walked in on Sommerfeldt and found a spot over the top of him for the 3-1 lead. However, it then became the Scott Coash show. Coash got open wide and took a pass cross zone from Trevor Grasby before finding a spot behind an outstretched Borodkin to close the gap to just 3-2. 31 seconds later Scott brought the puck into the zone and after drawing attention took a shot from the top of the circle beating Borodkin from afar to tie the game back up at 3-3.
It took extra time, but it was Biloxi's night as Captain Lucas Piekarczyk took a feed from Hugo Koch and buried it over Sommerfeldt for the 4-3 win in overtime.
Sommerfeldt stopped 25 of 29 in the loss.
Topeka returns to action tomorrow night to battle the Breakers at 7pm. Catch all the action on Youtube or Sporfie.
